2020 was one of my most successful years breeding ball pythons. Since it is just a hobby most of the money I make from selling ball pythons goes back to the reptiles. It’s a lot of substrate, lots of food and gadgets that help me save time and energy.
I’ve created a list of gadgets and tools that have helped me save time and prevented many headaches while keeping so over 50 reptiles. From tech to clean up tools, these are some of my most used, best investment products I’ve gotten this year. These products are the exact ones I have to give you a worry free experience taking care of ball pythons. I’m going to start with the best ones first.

Most home security packages don’t consider the garage to be a room to protect. (Even though it usually holds your most expensive assets). When I first moved into my house I knew that I wanted the garage to be “The Reptile Room” and it’s now home to over 50 animals(and some of them with a high price tag).
So my solution was to buy this exact camera that connects to my phone and gauges both temperature and humidity.
One fear of having so many reptiles in one room is that something can go wrong when I’m not there, so this camera will alert me whenever temperatures drop too low and cause harm to my animals.
Not only does it alert you on certain temps and humidity levels in the room, you are also able to rotate the camera 360° so you can see the entire room! This means that you can put the camera anywhere and still get visual of all corners of the room.
There is no mounting on this camera so it has to stand on top of something, but it is tiny so it will take very little room in your space. It has a cylindrical shape with a diameter of only 3 inches so anywhere you can put a cup of coffee, you can put this security camera.
Key Features: 16 gb of internal storage, remote control with phone app, 2 way audio, temperature and humidity gauge
|-Takes up little space
-No mounting required
-1080p video quality
-Works in low light areas
-App is available for Android and iOS
|-Motion sensor is not reliable
-Motion sensors pivot camera, but it doesn’t revert to the original position
-Cloud subscription is required to review more than 12 previous hours of footage.
2. Electric Pressure Washer-Top Cleaning Gadget
This pressure washer has been a game changer for my cleaning routine. The GreenWorks 1600 PSI Pressure Washer gives the perfect amount of pressure for cleaning ball python tubs and rat tubs without breaking the bank(or my tubs).
I find myself using this every week for a deep cleaning and getting off any of those pesky messes on any plastic surface. It’s easy to setup, easy to use and affordable. The triple threat of 2021!
One of the best things about this pressure washer is that it actually works. Reptile messes don’t stand a chance and you can save yourself from scrubbing tubs. The cord is extra long so you can bring it wherever you need to.
Key Features: 1600 PSI, just enough so you can clean plastic, 35 ft cord+20 foot high pressure cable, 25° and 45° nozzle attachments
|-Easy to set up
-Easy to use
-Additional accessories available to purchase
-Doesn’t break through plastic
-Includes nozzle storage and nozzle cleaner
|-Cables have no storage area attached to the pressure washer
-Plug is large (I have to use the top outlet for it to fit)
3. SensorPush Wireless Thermometer/Hygrometer – Best High Tech Item
If security cams aren’t for you, you can always opt for one of these. SensorPush Wireless Thermometer/Hygrometer is a small device that senses temperature and humidity wherever you put it.
It’s small and connects to your phone so you can see exact data in any area you choose. With easy to read graphs you will never have to worry about temps being too low for your reptiles or incubators. You can set up alerts that go straight to your phone if temperatures or humidity go out of range that you choose.
The square sensor can stand anywhere but it comes with a 3M double sided sticker to mount it anywhere you need to, like the inside of your incubator.
Key features: 325 ft range, 20 day exportable data, multiple sensor capability, easy to use app.
-Easy to read data
|– Only holds 20 days of data
-Wifi remote access sold separately
4. Stand Steady Original Tubstr Collapsible Wire Cart – 3 Shelf Wire Utility Cart – Most Convenient
One thing I didn’t know I needed but now can’t live without is this utility cart. This is the exact one that I’ve been using for years and it’s still being used to the max.
The cart has 4 swivel castor wheels so it’s easy to move. The best part? It’s collapsible so you can store it away when you don’t need it, but when dealing with so many reptiles, you definitely will be using this.
The 3 tiers are the perfect size to hold buckets, tubs and supplies like calcium, feeding tongs, gloves and more.
Key Features: heavy duty steel material, 4 swivel castor wheels, 300lb weight limit, folds to be 9 inches wide, 3 shelves
|-Magnetic material allows you to add hooks for extra storage
– Maximum shelf space with 3 tiers
|-Small items fall through the spaces,
-Only 2 of 4 wheels can lock
5. SE 12″ Stainless Steel Self-Locking Curved Forceps -Most Used of 2020
You might be wondering why this makes the list of the best supplies to get for ball python care, but it’s one of those products that you didn’t know you needed until you have it.
These tongs are lockable so you don’t have to keep squeezing them together to hold you ball python’s food. They are easy to use and help me stay comfortable while feeding. They are long enough to keep your hands safe from any ball python teeth but short enough to handle comfortably.
Key Features: quality stainless steel, self locking, serrated tip, heavy duty
|-Choose your own size,
-Choose straight or curved end
-Long lasting and durable
-Works well for any size hands
|-Doesn’t work well for picking up small items like insects(I recommend a shorter length)
6. Honeywell HZ-789 EnergySmart Electric Oil Filled Heater – Newest Purchase
As I’ve said before our reptiles are kept in our garage turned man-cave. Even in California winter gets too cold for ball python breeding.
This heater is something I purchased just this year and so far it’s been doing great. The heater has energy saving features the turn it off when it reaches a certain temperature.
The best feature is the timer. I have it set so it only turns on at night and I don’t have to think about it after that. The heater works just enough to get the room to a comfortable temperature for all my animals.
Key Features: safety turnover off switch, energy saving modes, 5 ft. cord, swivel castor wheels
|-Warms up quickly
-Sleek black design
-Easy to use controls
|-Small wheels are hard to roll
-Oil makes popping sound when warming up
7. Herpstat 1 Thermostat – Most Reliable Product
I currently have four different thermostats running in my reptile room as we speak, but the Herpstat 1 by Spyder Robotics is the most reliable and easy to use.
This thermostat is beyond others since you can calibrate it if you need to.It also allows you to have a day and night cycle if you choose. The thermostat is reliable since the settings remain if it were to lose power and that itself is the most beneficial feature for someone with little time to spare. I use it specifically for heating, but it’s able to adjust lighting and humidity as well.
Key Features: Alarm for no power , backlit lcd display, configurable for heating, cooling, lighting, or humidity.
|-Specifically formatted for reptile use,
-Easy to read screen,
-Reliable power outage alarm
|-Only has 1 outlet and probe sensor
8. Rubbermaid Commercial BRUTE Heavy-Duty Waste Container, 32 Gallon -Best Item for Dirty Work
When you have 50+ reptiles to care for you’re going to need anything you can get to help you shave time of the cleaning process. This trash can has been one the best investments so far.
With so many animals there is so much waste and instead of lugging my garbage can, I just roll this baby around wherever I need it. It’s big enough to hold all the waste but small enough to use a trash bag that I can throw into my Waste Management bin. The lid is one of the most important parts to keep odors under control.
Key Features: dolly has swivel wheels for easy mobility, hooks to hold trash bags secure, vents for easy bag removal, UV, 32 gallons of space, 250 lb. weight capacity(for dolly)
|-Easily to roll around
-Dolly stays locked on,
-Great odor control,
-Withstands all types of weather,
even sun exposure.
|-Color options are limited
-Expensive for a trash can
Taking care of ball pythons is hard work especially if you have more than one. As a ball python breeder I have over 50 ball pythons to care for. These products make it easy for me to get the ball rolling.
Most of these are for ease of mind, but I absolutely can’t live without the necessities like feeding tongs and the pressure washer.
Hopefully you have all of these items and if you don’t definitely consider them.
